Radiation Protection

Australian Solaria Regulation and Operator Training

About Regulation of Solaria in Australia

An agreed set of regulatory elements for solaria was formulated by the Radiation Health Committee, which includes members from each of the radiation regulatory authorities in Australia. These elements were based on the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2635:2008, Solaria for Cosmetic Purposes and were approved by the Australian Health Ministers Conference and adopted into the national framework for radiation regulation in 2010. (For details see section 5.4.1 of RPS 6 - the National Directory for Radiation Protection). Each of the jurisdictions throughout Australia has been working towards taking up these requirements within their radiation licensing/registration regime. One of the requirements is that operators of tanning units in solaria must complete approved training.

ARPANSA Online Solarium Operator Course

ARPANSA has designed an online training course specifically for Australian solarium operators.

What does the course cover?

This course aims to give participants an understanding of the safe use of solaria in the context of AS/NZS 2635:2008 and the national regulatory requirements, and how to apply these in practice at work. Topics covered are:

Image of Sunbed
  • Types and wavelengths of UV radiation
  • How skin and tanning work
  • Effects of UV
  • Use of exposure schedules
  • Emergency procedures and injuries
  • Legal requirements
  • Equipment – safe operation and maintenance
  • Screening and protecting clients.

Who should do the course?

If you are an Australian tanning unit/solarium operator it may be necessary for you to undertake the ARPANSA online course as part of your local radiation regulatory requirements. If you are unsure whether this course is approved for use in your jurisdiction please contact your State or Territory radiation regulator to confirm. The course provides a minimum level of knowledge and is generic in nature. For information about the specifics of regulation of solaria in your jurisdiction you should contact the local regulator directly.

Managers from organisations purchasing courses for their staff are encouraged to undertake the course themselves to ensure that they are familiar with course content and able to identify any local compliance issues.

Purchasing the course

The cost of undertaking the course is $20.00 (plus GST) per participant and includes a certificate of completion, which may be required as evidence of completion for licensing purposes.

Only one course can be purchased at a time, as the name entered at registration will be used on the certificate of completion. If you are purchasing the course for your staff, make sure that the details of the course participant are entered at registration. Details for the person making the payment can be added at the final step of purchase for invoicing purposes.

To gain access to the course please follow the link below - this will take you to the course portal site (hosted by e3 Learning). Select the ‘BUY NOW’ button to be directed to the store where the course can be purchased using Paypal, Visa or Mastercard.
