The Joint Convention - Update May 2011

At the Organizational Meeting for the 4th Review Meeting held in Vienna on 10-11 May 2011, the Country Groups for the Review process were established.  The 58 countries who have ratified the Joint Convention were divided amongst six groups.

Australia is in Country Group 4 along with UK, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Argentina, Slovenia, Denmark, Indonesia, Republic Moldova and Montenegro.  Within this group, the numbers of nuclear power plants are UK 19 operating, 26 being decommissioned; Ukraine 15 operating, 4 being decommissioned; Czech Republic 6 operating; and Argentina 2 operating. Being in the same group should ensure that all these 10 countries are reviewed consistently in terms of our radioactive waste-safety efforts in comparison with each other.

At the meeting, Mr Chang Sun Kang of Korea was elected President for the Fourth Review Meeting to be held in Vienna, 14-23 May 2012.  Vice Chairs are Ms Olena Mykolaichuk of Ukraine and Dr Andy Hall of UK.

The Chair and Vice-Chair for the review of countries in Group 4 including Australia are Mr K. Hioki (Japan) and Ms H. Roman (Canada).  Mr Stuart Woollett of ARPANSA was elected as Vice-Chair of Country Group 2 (countries France, Sweden, Euratom, Slovak Republic, Greece, Lithuania, South Africa, Tajikistan and Uruguay).

The President of the Third Review Meeting, Mr Kunihisa Soda of Japan, has reintroduced the Joint Convention Newsletter, the first issue being March 2011. The newsletter can be download as a PDF from the  IAEA's Joint Convention webpage (posted under "Resources").
