Draft Amendment to the National Directory for Radiation Protection

X-ray Analysis Equipment

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency is inviting submissions on an amendment to the National Directory for Radiation Protection.

The aim of the National Directory is to provide nationally uniform requirements for the protection of people and the environment against exposure or potential exposure to ionising and non-ionising radiation and for the safety of radiation sources, including provision for the national adoption of codes and standards.  The National Directory has been developed to address the needs of radiation protection regulators but it will also benefit other sectors involved in implementing radiation controls, such as mining and occupational health and safety regulators.

The most recent edition of the National Directory which includes amendments 1-4 was published in April 2010.

This new amendment will incorporate registration criteria for X-ray analysis equipment into Schedule 9 for the purposes of Section 4.6.2 of the National Directory, which states:

4.6.2  Criteria for registration allowing the use of radiation sources and premises
Registrations allowing the use of a radiation source or premises must only be issued when those criteria considered necessary for the safe operation and security of the radiation source or the premises and specified in Schedule 9 are met.

Comments are also invited on the accompanying Best Practice Regulation Preliminary Assessment.

The following documents provide essential information to assist the submission process:

Requests for hardcopies can be made by email to secretariat@arpansa.gov.au or by telephoning (03) 9433 2339.

Public submissions closed on 4 March 2011.

All submissions will be held in a register of submissions, and unless marked confidential, may be made public.
