Summary

Review of numerical modelling of the interaction between electromagnetic fields and the human body. The computational methods that derive internal electric fields, currents and rate of energy deposition through full time-dependent solutions of Maxwell's equations are briefly summarized. The paper also provides an overview of applications such as mobile communications safety, magnetic resonance imaging, hyperthermal therapy and microwave radiometry.

A survey of the potential impact of the European Union Physical Agents Directive (EU PAD) on electromagnetic fields (EMF) on MRI research practice in the United Kingdom

Summary

On-line survey of MRI researchers to examine the impact of the European Union Physical Agents Directive (EU PAD) on Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) on the use of MRI for research, diagnosis, and treatment. The authors conclude that the EU PAD could have a very prohibitive impact on research practice. The current exposure limits would prohibit interventional MRI, limit the provision of patient care, and restrict researchers from reaching into the magnet bore to position and check equipment or to provide technical support.

Monitoring of people and workers exposure to the electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields in an Italian national cancer Institute

Summary

A survey of magnetic field levels of several medical devices used for diagnostics and therapy was conducted at the Regina Elena National Cancer Institute (NCI). The range of magnetic field levels was between 0.05T and 80T and the majority (89%) of the measurements were within 3T. The authors recommend that the presence of oncological patients near these devices warrants a prudent avoidance strategy.
