Position Description
Position Title: ARPANSA Graduate
Reports To: Branch Director/Graduate Coordinator
Security Level: Confidential (dependent on employment location)
Qualifications: An undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a recognised Australian educational institution, with a major in a physics, chemistry, environmental science and engineering.
Role Overview: The graduate will spend two years the theory and practice of radiation protection and nuclear safety. This will include undertaking a specific training program and being assigned tasks in one or more of ARPANSA’s five branches.
First year: During the first year the graduate will undertake a specific training program and work closely with senior staff. It is intended that the graduate will gain experience in several aspects of environmental monitoring, ionising and non-ionising radiation, standards of medical, public and occupational radiation exposures, the Commonwealth’s regulatory framework as well as financial and policy matters.
Second year: Subject to satisfactory completion of the first year’s training program, the graduate will undertake a 12 month experiential learning working closely with branch management on project based activities aligned to ARPANSA’S goals and objectives.
Key activities: The graduate will be expected to undertake a range of assigned tasks in one or more branches in ARPANSA. These tasks may include:
- Contributing to the programme of regulatory assessment and compliance;
- Preparation of policy documentation including ministerial and departmental briefing material;
- Developing laboratory testing methods;
- Researching topics with a high public profile and compiling information resources for distribution to the public;
- Development of calibration facilities relating to electromagnetic radiation issues;
- Calibration of radiation measuring instruments and of exposures traceable to the Australian standards;
- Measurement and analysis for the programme for assessment of background radiation for Australia.
