Second Round Submissions invited on Replacement Reactor Licence Application

In Sydney today, ARPANSA invited second round public submissions on safety matters in an issues paper on ANSTO's application for a facility licence to construct its proposed replacement research reactor (RRR) at Lucas Heights. Submissions close on 21 December.

CEO Dr John Loy said, "11,500 people made submissions on ANSTO's licence application when they first had the opportunity between June and September. I invite all of them to address the ARPANSA issues paper released today, as it contains the topics they were most concerned about. In particular, there are sections on nuclear reactor safety, accident analysis, seismic analysis and seismic design, spent fuel and radioactive wastes".

The issues paper describes what ANSTO, an independent peer review and first round public submissions say about:

The purpose of this second round is to seek additional submissions addressing specific issues.

In addition to providing an overview of pertinent safety topics, the issues paper suggests further possible avenues of public comment and each section is referenced to make this task easier.

Part 5 poses ten questions that Dr Loy would like further comment on from the public. These reflect the key RRR issues that continue to be assessed by ARPANSA and are the subject of other inquiry. For example, the Nuclear Safety Committee continues to prepare advice for Dr Loy on the adequacy of seismic design as it relates to safety systems, accident analysis and the siting reference accident, and spent fuel and waste management.
