Radiation Protection Series No. 1
Recommendations for Limiting Exposure to Ionizing Radiation (1995) and National Standard for Limiting Occupational Exposure to Ionizing Radiation (republished 2002)
These Recommendations and Standard take into account the recommendations of the ICRP, which were adopted after careful review of all available scientific evidence concerning the risks arising from exposure to ionizing radiation.
A revision of RPS 1 to take account of the publication of more recent recommendations by the ICRP [ICRP 103] and the revised IAEA Basic Safety Standards has also commenced.
ARPANSA and the Radiation Health Committee hosted a forum on the RPS 1 review at the Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS) conference in Melbourne on 19 October 2011. RHC members, invited guest speakers and ARPANSA staff gave a series of presentations and facilitated a discussion session,
The presentations covered the proposed content and format of the replacement documents, outlined the major changes planned and described some expected implementation outcomes through case studies focusing on medical radiation, the environment and existing exposure situations. The forum also saw the launch of a further project arising out of the RPS 1 review, which will see a revision of the hierarchy of RPS publications to better align with the IAEA system.
These are significant undertakings that will set the radiation protection agenda in Australia for the next 10-15 years. This forum was the first step in a wide consultation process that will be undertaken as these projects evolve.
Printed copies of RPS No. 1 are available for purchase directly from ARPANSA at a cost of AUD$18.70 per copy (incl. GST and postage).
