ARPANSA - Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency

The Code establishes requirements for the use of ionizing radiation in medicine for inclusion in the National Directory for Radiation Protection and adoption by Australian jurisdictions. The Code is a regulatory document that covers the practices of radiotherapy, diagnostic and interventional radiology and nuclear medicine. Safety Guides relating to Radiation Protection in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Radiation Protection in Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Protection in Radiotherapy have also been published.

Public Consultation Documents

The Draft Code was first released for industry consultation in May 2007, then for broader public consultation in August 2007. The second consultation period included the draft Regulatory Impact Statement, and three draft Safety Guides: Radiation Protection in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology; Radiation Protection in Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Protection in Radiotherapy. During the consultation period ARPANSA held a National Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine. Many submissions from the public consultation incorporated comments on all documents, while others specifically related to the Safety Guides. Comments and responses on each of the Safety Guides will be published in conjunction with the final documents. As a result, the Summary of Submissions and Responses documents below only include submissions on the Code and Regulatory Impact Statement.
