INVITATION TO MAKE SUBMISSIONS

ARPANSA Radiation Protection Series
Draft Recommendations for Classification of Radioactive Waste

ARPANSA is inviting submissions on the Draft Recommendations for Classification of Radioactive Waste. The purpose of these Recommendations is to set out a general scheme for classifying radioactive waste that is based primarily on considerations of long term safety and disposal of the waste. The Recommendations identify the conceptual boundaries between different classes of waste and provide guidance on the definition of the different classes of waste on the basis of long term safety considerations. They will assist in the development and implementation of appropriate waste management strategies and facilitate communication and information exchange within and among jurisdictions.

A preliminary assessment of the Recommendations relating to perceived costs was prepared and forwarded to the Office of Best Practice Regulation (OBPR) for consideration.  OBPR has agreed that the costs to industry through implementing the Recommendations would be negligible and that further cost-benefit analysis would not be necessary. It should be noted that any future documents that invoke these Recommendations as the appropriate scheme for classifying radioactive waste may require regulatory impact assessment.

The following documents provide essential information to assist the submission process:

Requests for hardcopies can be made by email to secretariat@arpansa.gov.au or by telephoning (03) 9433 2339.
