International Conventions
International Conventions and Australia's obligations
ARPANSA administers Australia's rights and obligation under:
- the UN Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management which was ratified by Australia in August 2003, and
- the Convention on Nuclear Safety which was ratified by Australia in March 1997.
ARPANSA also administers Australia's rights and obligations under the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident and the Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency. ARPANSA is the designated Australian Competent Authority for Radiation Emergencies for the implementation of these two Conventions.
The Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident was ratified by Australia on 23 October 1987.
The Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency was ratified by Australia on 23 October 1987.
