National and International Collaborations
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an organisation within the United Nations family.
The Agency works with its Member States (Australia is a signatory) and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe use of :
- nuclear installations,
- large radiation facilities,
- radioactive sources,
- radioactive materials in transport, and
- radioactive waste.
The IAEA provides a framework for joint efforts to build and strengthen an international safety and security regime. Such a framework includes:
- advisory international standards, codes, and guides;
- binding international conventions; and
- international peer reviews to evaluate national operations, capabilities, and infrastructures.
ARPANSA representatives sit on a number of committees tasked with developing standards in line with best practice. Such committees include:
- The Nuclear Safety Standards Committee (NUSSC);
- The Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC);
- The Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC); and
- The Waste Safety Standards Committee (WASSC).
