ANSTO Radiopharmaceutical Production Facility
ARPANSA Investigation of safety at ANSTO Radiopharmaceutical Production Facility
ARPANSA regulates the safe use of radiation and associated facilities by Australian Government bodies and their contractors in accordance with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998. Regulation incorporates authorising the use of sources of radiation and associated facilities and activities to monitor and enforce compliance with conditions of authorisation.
The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation including its radiopharmaceutical production facility is subject to regulation by ARPANSA under the ARPANS Act. In 2010, ARPANSA completed its investigation of claims made by an employee of ANSTO regarding safety at the organisation’s radiopharmaceutical production facility. The investigation was reported to the Parliament in the Quarterly Report of the Chief Executive Officer (PDF 830kb) for the period 1 July to 30 September 2010.
The inspection report arising from the investigation, identified a number of issues relating to the safe operation of the radiopharmaceutical production facility and made recommendations to improve safety practices and safety culture at the facility. Compliance with these recommendations remains under close scrutiny by ARPANSA.
ARPANSA is now assisting the Australian Government’s workplace safety regulator, Comcare, in reviewing its report regarding claims made to it by the ANSTO employee.
ARPANSA will continue to perform its role as an independent, transparent and expert radiation protection and nuclear safety regulator.
On 23 February Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research announced the formation of a high-level panel to evaluate the health and safety practices at the ANSTO Radiopharmaceutical Production Facility.
