ANAO Report
ARPANSA’s response to the Australian National Audit Office report on its regulatory functions
In 2004 the Australian National Audit Office(ANAO) investigated aspects of the licensing processes established by ARPANSA. The objective of the audit was to “…assess ARPANSA’s management of the regulation of Commonwealth radiation and nuclear activities to ensure the safety of their radiation facilities and sources.” The audit examined ARPANSA’s:
- Key governance arrangements supporting the regulatory function;
- Recovery of regulatory costs;
- Licensing processes;
- Monitoring and compliance; and
- Management of non-compliance and unlicensed activity.
The ANAO made 19 performance improvement recommendations all of which were accepted by ARPANSA. The ANAO report, Regulation of Commonwealth Radiation and Nuclear Activities, Audit Report No 30 of 2004-2005, was tabled in March 2005 and is available on the ANAO website: http://www.anao.gov.au.
How has ARPANSA responded to the ANAO recommendations?
The ARPANSA Response to the ANAO Report (PDF 68kb) describes ARPANSA’s work to improve the management of its regulatory function.
The document has also taken into account the work of the external Regulatory Review Committee (RRCC) formed by the CEO of ARPANSA in March 2005 to assist ARPANSA respond to the ANAO audit recommendations.
