Linear Accelerator

Technician working in Radiopharmaceutical Services

ARPANSA has a refurbished Vickers (Radiation Dynamics) electron linear accelerator similar to those in use at the NPL in the UK and the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC).

The LINAC's electron beam energy can be varied continuously between 7 and 21 MeV. Pulse repetition frequencies are available from 3 to 400 pulses per second. A single shot mode is available for pulse radiolysis. There are two beam lines, one for high dose applications with electron beams and the other for dosimetry measurements with megavoltage electron or photon beams under defined spatial conditions and beam qualities.

On the beam line used for dosimetry, the electrons are bent through an angle of nearly 55o, passed through a pair of slits to restrict the energy spread and refocussed onto a conversion target. For X-ray production, the conversion target is made up of four tantalum discs, each of thickness 0.4 mm, followed by up to 60 mm of aluminium, which acts as an electron beam stop and a filter to harden the photon beam. The X-ray beam is collimated and filtered further to produce a suitably sized field of the desired quality in water and graphite phantoms.
