Best Practice Regulation Workshop

On behalf of the Radiation Health Committee, ARPANSA hosted a Best Practice Regulation Workshop. Participants were invited from the regulatory authorities involved in radiation regulation in each of the jurisdictions across Australia. The workshop was designed to promote a national conversation about best practice regulation and how it can be used by regulatory authorities to promote efficiency, facilitate compliance, make stakeholder interaction transparent and enhance radiation safety.

Workshop format

• Participants were welcomed by Carl-Magnus Larsson, CEO ARPANSA and the workshop was facilitated by Julia Langdon, Partner (Risk) Ernst & Young.
• Each jurisdiction presented one slide and described their definition of best practice regulation.
• Presentations from Fiona Harvey (Environment Protection Authority, South Australia) and Sophie Dwyer (Queensland Health) describing best practice regulation challenges and achievements in the environment and food industry sectors.
• Participants discussed how the concept of best practice regulation can be used as a means of assessing and promoting uniform regulatory outcomes.
• Participants undertook group discussions on relevant case studies using the principles identified in the earlier session. The groups reported their findings back to the whole workshop.
• The workshop ended with a facilitated discussion on how these cases highlighted the principles of best practice regulation and its application to radiation safety regulation in Australia.

There was a high degree of participant engagement and interaction during the workshop and it was considered by all as a successful and educational day.
