NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RADIATION PROTECTION IN MEDICINE
ARPANSA NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RADIATION PROTECTION IN MEDICINE
Melbourne, Wednesday, 3 October 2007
Vibe Savoy Hotel, Melbourne
The Radiation Health Committee, established under the ARPANS Act 1998, is developing a Code of Practice for Radiation Protection in the Medical Applications of Ionizing Radiation. The Code will cover diagnostic and interventional radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. It is intended that when completed, the Code will be adopted in all jurisdictions in Australia and form the basis of regulatory requirements for the medical uses of radiation.
The Code will be supported by three Safety Guides, on diagnostic and interventional radiology, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine, respectively.
As part of the consultation process in the development of the Code and Safety Guides, ARPANSA has sponsored a National Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine, held in Melbourne on Wednesday 3 October 2007 at the Vibe Savoy Hotel.
The Conference presented information on:
- the national and international context for regulatory controls over the use of radiation in medicine, including the National Directory for Radiation Protection (NDRP) and the regulatory impact statement process established by the Council of Australian Governments for the development of national standards and regulatory actions;
- the rationale for the Code and its main features, and the key issues on which it will be important to get feedback from the professions;
- the purpose and main features of the three Safety Guides, including perspectives from professional groups involved with development of the Safety Guides;
The draft Code, draft Safety Guides and draft Regulatory Impact Statement were released for public comment prior to the Conference providing a significant consultation opportunity in the development of the Code and Safety Guides, which once in place will influence the regulatory approach to the use of radiation in medicine for many years to come.
