Draft Amendment to the National Directory for Radiation Protection

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency is inviting submissions on Amendment No. 2 to the National Directory for Radiation Protection.

The aim of the Directory is to provide nationally uniform requirements for the protection of people and the environment against exposure or potential exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and for the safety of radiation sources, including provision for the national adoption of codes and standards. The Directory has been developed to address the needs of radiation protection regulators but it will also benefit other sectors involved in implementing radiation controls, such as mining and occupational health and safety regulators.

Edition 1.0 of the National Directory for Radiation Protection was published in August 2004.

Amendment No. 2 to the Directory proposes clarifications to the exemption provisions, particularly those related to exemption of naturally-occurring radionuclides and to exemption of bulk quantities of material, by adding a number of footnotes to the exemption clauses. Schedule 5 of the Directory is also proposed to be amended to extend the list of specific exemptions to cover a range of low activity radioactive sources.

Comments are also invited on the accompanying Best Practice Regulation Preliminary Assessment.
