Managing Radioactive Materials and Waste
A permit is required to import radioactive materials and can be obtained on application to ARPANSA.
Importation of radioactive materials
Radioactive materials may need to be imported into Australia for their use in medicine, industry or for research purposes. A permit is required to import radioactive materials and can be obtained on application to ARPANSA. There are two categories of import permit available. One applies to medical radioisotopes, the other to non-medical radioisotopes. It is prohibited to import radioactive waste into Australia.
Transportation of radioactive materials
Radioactive materials or commodities containing radioactivity may be transported into and out of Australia. The safety of such international transportation is covered by the transport regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The safety of transportation within Australia is guided by ARPANSA’s Code of Practice for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. Radioactive materials may need to be transported around Australia after their importation, before their exportation, as part of their use in medicine, industry or research, or prior to their disposal at an appropriate disposal facility.
Disposal of radioactive waste
Radioactive materials of no further use may be disposed of at an appropriate radioactive waste disposal facility. The choices for disposal are dependent on the amount of waste for disposal, the activity of the waste, the method by which the waste was produced and the jurisdiction in which the waste belongs. The manner in which the waste was generated will indicate whether non-radiological contaminants will be present in the waste and what form the waste is in. In some cases waste must be treated or conditioned to change it into an appropriate form for disposal.
