Radiation Safety Advice and Risk Evaluation - Environmental Radiation
Environmental Radiation
ARPANSA has the capability to assess the level and impact of ionising radiation, from natural and man-made materials, on public health and the environment. Assessments include:
- Level and impact of radionuclides in the Australian environment resulting from natural enhancement, releases from industrial sources, or a nuclear accident
- Radionuclide transport modelling and internal dosimetry for critical radionuclides found in the Australian environment
- Management and disposal of Naturally-Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) waste from industries, including oil and gas extraction, and the mining and processing of phosphate ores, tin, tantalum and other non-ferrous ores, and coal; including dose and health-risk assessments
- Dose and health-risk assessments in regard to the potential radiation exposure of nuclear veterans
- Health risk assessment and standards compliance for building materials used in Australia, such as granite bench-tops, phosphogypsum plaster-board, zircon glaze and ceramic or clay tiles
- Management of radioactive waste and assessment and rehabilitation of sites that have been contaminated by radioactive materials.
