What is ARPANSA?
The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is part of the Commonwealth Health and Aged Care portfolio and is Australia's national authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. The principal objective of ARPANSA is to protect the health and safety of people, and to protect the environment, from the harmful effects of radiation. ARPANSA came into being on 5th February 1999. The organisation combines and extends the functions and resources of two pre-existing organisations the Australian Radiation Laboratory and the Nuclear Safety Bureau. ARPANSA's task is to:
- build and maintain world class capacity to measure radiation and assess health effects,
- undertake scientific research and services related to occupational and public radiation protection and nuclear safety, and medical exposures to radiation,
- advise on radiation protection, nuclear safety and related health issues,
- regulate Commonwealth entities that use radiation sources and nuclear facilities, and
- establish and develop a national, uniform radiation control framework accepted by all State and Territory regulatory authorities.
ARPANSA also provides authoritative advice on radiation health and nuclear safety matters to Commonwealth entities and interacts with a range of national and international organisations. ARPANSA publishes technical reports and contributes articles to scientific journals to disseminate its research to relevant scientific, medical and technical communities. Information Bulletins for the general public are available at no charge.
ARPANSA has a Sydney office (14-16 Central Road, Miranda, NSW) and a Melbourne office (619 Lower Plenty Road, Yallambie, VIC). Further information about ARPANSA's activities may be obtained from the Information Officer.
We offer UPF testing to AS/NZS4399 and can supply UPF swing tags.
