NORM Dose conversion factor update

The ICRP has now published four of the five OIR series (ICRP Publications 130, 134, 137 & 141) that updates the dose conversion factors for radionuclides. Publication of Part 4 of the series (ICRP 141) completes all the radionuclides found in the naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) decay series for uranium and thorium. Coverage of the uranium and thorium decay series means that dose conversion factors for occupational intakes in industries that mine, mill, process or produce products from NORM are required to be reviewed and updated if necessary. The release of these new dose conversion factors means the existing values provided in RPS 9 and RPS 9.1 are incorrect and out of date.

The attached “Amended Tables” document provides the updated information to be published while “Review of selected option” provides the options considered and consultation undertaken to reach this decision for selected coefficients.

ARPANSA will update the RPS 9 and RPS 9.1 websites with the proposed new tables and information regarding the amendment. The current advisory page on dose conversion factors will also be updated to provide additional information relating to the published ICRP documents.
