Draft Safety Guide under development

ARPANSA is currently drafting a safety guide on the exemption and clearance of radioactive material (the Guide).
The Guide will cover:

  • assessment if regulatory control of materials and items that present a relatively low risk of radiation exposure is appropriate
  • determining if regulatory control of a radioactive substance is necessary
  • identifying the materials and items that are not amenable to regulatory control
  • recommendations for the calculation of exemption and clearance levels for radioactive materials
  • relevant Australian scenarios (with reference to international best practice methods and including examples).

The Guide is directed to people dealing with controlled materials and items, and Commonwealth, State and Territory authorities regulating those practices.

It is intended the Guide will provide organisations with clarity about the application of exemption and clearance.
This is part of our ongoing efforts to promote uniformity of radiation protection and nuclear safety policy and practices across Australian jurisdictions.

Exemption and Clearance Webinar

On 20 August 2025 we hosted an online webinar about the purpose and application of the safety guide and to give people an opportunity to have their say on what they want to see in the guide.

You can view the recording of the webinar here and the slide deck here
