About the Personal Radiation Monitoring Service (PRMS)

Operating since 1932, PRMS measures radiation doses that workers may receive.

About the PRMS

ARPANSA and the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) have established radiation protection standards and have set annual effective dose limits for radiation workers in order to minimise the chance of adverse effects occurring. These standards recommend that the annual dose received by radiation workers should not exceed 20,000 microsievert (µSv), averaged over 5 years, with no more than 50,000 µSv in any one year.

By the consistent wearing of monitors, it is possible to determine the annual dose received by each individual and to establish that the amount of radiation received by these people is below the recommended limits.

The PRMS is accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA Accredited Laboratory Number 14442). All measurements are performed in accordance with the NATA requirements which include the Standard General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025). All doses are traceable to Australian Primary Standards. A comprehensive quality assurance program underpins the reliability and quality of the Service.

Dose records and the PRMS database

Monitors are issued regularly for a 4, 8 or 12 weekly wearing period. At the end of each period, the monitors are returned to the PRMS for processing and assessment of the doses recorded by them. The Dose Report issued to each Centre lists the doses received by each monitor and the accumulated doses received in the last twelve month period for each wearer.

The dose records of all individuals monitored by the Service are kept indefinitely by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.

Since 1986, each wearer registered with the Service has had their doses recorded on the PRMS Database of Occupationally Exposed Persons which is maintained by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. This enables a complete dose history of each person monitored by the Service to be maintained, no matter where they work.
